They fear that once their employees get on the sites, they will nolonger have time to do their jobs. Iremember hearing this same complaint about allowing employees access to theinternet. But,how can we incorporate social media into our day and save time? Here are five tips:1. Create asocial media strategy. Think about whatyou want to accomplish by using the social media. Do not join Facebook or Twitter just becausesomeone asks you. Decide why you want toparticipate and then set some clear goals for doing so. Think about how participating on these siteswill help move you closer to your customer.2. Limit yourtime on the social media. Allow yourselfno more than an hour a day to update, explore and contribute to the socialmedia sites. Block off the time as if itwere an appointment.3. Look forways to network on the social sites without having to go to networkingevents. Networking events consume a lotof time.
They require you to get in yourcar and go someplace. Use the social sitesto network with others as you would at a networking event. Here are some ways: a) Find a niche you wantto network with. It could be salesmanagers, human resource managers, recruiters, etc. b) Share information thatyou think would be helpful to someone as you might face-to-face at anevent. LinkedIn gives you lots ofopportunities to do this in the Discussion section of their groups. Look over the discussions. Can you add anything that might answersomeones question? c) Sign up on other peoples sites. This is like asking for someones businesscard. d) Comment on other peoples blogs.4. Use thesocial sites to find potential leads. Inother words, use the social sites to prospect. You can use the search function on LinkedIn or Twitter to locatebusinesses that fit your niche.5. With all thetime youve saved by not going to networking events, and by eliminating coldcalling, you can add another hour or 30 minutes to your social media dailyschedule. But, never allow yourself toexceed two hours daily on the social sites.
